Most remember the battle for Iwo Jima by the iconic flag raising image taken by photographer Joe Rosenthal. However, few realize it was the only battle of WWII in which America suffered more casualties than the enemy.

On February 19, 1945, George E. Wahlen landed on the beaches of Iwo Jima with his Marine company of 250 men. When a Marine was hit, his job was to go out into the line of fire to protect and administer to the injured man. Wahlen saved countless lives, often carrying men twice his size to safety. Witnesses of his heroics remain dumbfounded he survived. The story, however, remains one of the most incredible accounts of heroism of World War II.
In October, 1945, George was summoned to the White House to receive the Medal of Honor from President Harry S Truman. The official medal citation reads like a rejected John Wayne movie script too grand to be believed.

After months of post-war rehabilitation, he came home and stuffed the Medal of Honor in a drawer and told no one about it. Even his wife, Melba, didn’t know

he was a national war hero until years after they were married; she learned one day when she curiously opened an invitation for both of them to attend the inauguration of President Eisenhower.
The memories were too painful to discuss, and any talk of George being a hero made him cringe. He spent almost six decades trying to forget Iwo Jima. He was content to take his story to his grave, but family and friends recently persuaded him to tell of his experiences, convincing him that the events are not just a painful personal memory, but a story belonging to the nation’s heritage. Now George has agreed to come forward, hoping to honor his brothers-in-arms who died on this forsaken island. Author Gary W. Toyn was asked to piece together the 60 year old puzzle, and now this incredible story is told.
Bob Dole, Orrin Hatch, James Bradley (Flags of our Fathers), Harlan Glenn (History Channel) and many others agree, “The Quiet Hero” is quite possibly the last, great untold story of World War II.
