How to submit a book proposal
American Legacy Media will not consider unsolicited manuscripts, but we welcome book proposals under certain conditions. Although we will consider fiction titles, we specialize in non-fiction titles which focus on biographies, history, and military subjects. If you wish to submit a title for consideration for publication, please send a completed book proposal consisting of:
- A cover letter describing the work as a whole, including any and all pertinent information about your project, your target audience, and why you chose to submit to us. (See our Notes for Authors below)
- A proposed table of contents.
- One or two sample chapters to give us a sense of the scope of the project and your writing style. (Do not submit an entire manuscript.)
- A description of your target audience.
- A paragraph describing your project, your qualifications to write this book, and information about related and/or competing titles.
- A self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient US postage for the return of your materials. Without postage, we will not return your materials.
We will not consider e-mail submissions.
American Legacy Media is not responsible for loss or damage to your submitted materials. We will only return your materials if you include a self-addressed envelope with the appropriate US postage.
DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL COPIES! Please send us duplicate copies of your text and artwork!
Include your return address, and other contact information, including ALL pertinent phone numbers, fax, and e-mail.
Please address all submissions to:

Please allow two to three weeks for a response. If we choose to pursue your manuscript for publishing, we will be in contact with you regarding your options.
Unfortunately we receive many more book proposals than we can publish. We hope to publish many quality books in the future, especially from among the unsolicited proposals we receive. If you aren’t sure how to best prepare your proposal, please consult one of the many good reference books available at most libraries and bookstores.
Notes for authors who are asked to submit a manuscript
If we request a complete manuscript, these guidelines will help clarify the process of submitting your manuscript to American Legacy Media:
Presentation of the manuscript
Manuscripts should be presented double-spaced and printed on one side only of clean, white, 8 1⁄2 “ X 11” paper. It is not necessary to design the page to appear like a printed page. However, please make the various headings are clear and logical. Leave wide margins to allow the copy editor room to write. The pages should be numbered consecutively throughout.
Please do not staple, bind, hole punch your submission. Ensure that all sections of the manuscript are complete and in their final form when presented. Include a preface, foreword or glossary if it can help the copy editor understand your title.
Checklist of what to include:
- List of contents with chapter headings and main sub-headings.
- List of acronyms and abbreviations
- Lists of figures, boxes, tables - a separate one for each
- 'About the contributors' material - for edited volumes only.
- The copy editing process cannot begin until we have all of the material.
- At our discretion, we may ask for an electronic copy of your manuscript, and the criteria will be provided at that time.
- Do not send us your only copy of your work. Keep a copy of the entire work and a copy of all the electronic files.
